Global Co-Creation with Local Insight: Siemens & Vivolight Medical’s DSA-OCT Integrated System, Ushering a New Era for intelligent Cathlab
On November 6, 2024, at the China International Import Expo in Shanghai, Siemens and Vivolight Medical jointly launched the world’s first DSA-OCT integrated multimodal diagnostic and therapeutic platform, the ARTIS icono floor. This innovative technology, a collaboration result between an international medical giant and a local pioneer, combines Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging, providing comprehensive vascular insights for physicians performing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This integration improves diagnostic efficiency, enabling more precise PCI strategies for patients.
According to the 2023 China Cardiovascular Health and Disease Report, there are approximately 330 million people with cardiovascular disease in China. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the country, accounting for two out of every five deaths. It is estimated that by 2030, the proportion of people aged 65 and above will reach nearly 11% of the world’s total population. With China’s aging population, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease is expected to continue rising, and PCI remains a critical treatment approach.
DSA: Known as the "gold standard" for coronary artery disease diagnosis in PCI procedures, DSA reveals 2D images of vascular narrowing and blockages by injecting contrast agents. However, its external viewpoint limits information on internal vascular lesion.
OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) serves as the "third eye" for interventional physicians, addressing the limitations of DSA (Digital Subtraction Angiography). By inserting an imaging catheter into the blood vessel, OCT uses a high-speed rotating optical fiber to emit near-infrared light along the vessel wall, capturing high-resolution cross-sectional images of vascular microstructures.
The 2023 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Guidelines on Chronic Coronary Syndromes highlighted the importance of using OCT or IVUS (Intravascular Ultrasound) for imaging guidance in complex PCI procedures, awarding it the highest recommendation level of IA.
Traditionally, DSA (Digital Subtraction Angiography) and OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) were used as independent systems, requiring frequent switching between devices. This process consumed valuable time, occupied cathlab space, and increased radiation exposure for medical staff. Additionally, the separate operation of these systems compromised PCI precision and efficiency.
The DSA-OCT Integrated Multimodal Diagnostic Platform offers transformative benefits for interventional procedures:
Vivolight Medical’s Integrated OCT system has undergone extensive compatibility testing with Siemens' angiography machines across all models. By seamlessly integrating DSA and OCT imaging, the platform provides comprehensive anatomical and functional vascular insights. This enables tailored treatment plans and has demonstrated clinical benefits in over 40% of complex cardiac stent procedures.
Bedsides a tableside controller and a remote operation combination in the control room, this system also equipped with an OCT pullback trigger pedal, which enhance the operational efficiency and user experience.
This integration not only improves precision and outcomes for patients but also represents a major leap forward in the modernization of cathlab.
Vivolight Medical aims to revolutionize interventional procedures by creating an AI-powered computational center for catheterization rooms. Leveraging intravascular imaging data and cutting-edge artificial intelligence, Vivolight provides physicians with evidence-based procedural guidance derived from big data and machine learning.
